Policy & Ethics

NDRI Guidelines
NDRI supplies materials that would otherwise be discarded, including tissue specimens from surgery and autopsy, as well as donated organs that do not meet established criteria for human transplantation.

NDRI serves scientists conducting medical research. Institutions supported include hospitals, universities and medical centers as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and both private and government-operated research laboratories.

Researcher Application Review
All research applications for human biomaterials from NDRI must be approved by NDRI’s Feasibility Review Committee, who, themselves, are nationally and internationally recognized scientists. All applications must be submitted in writing and provide a detailed protocol for tissue retrieval, preservation and delivery. Applications are considered in terms of scientific merit as well as feasibility of tissue/organ collection and delivery.

Donor Confidentiality and Consent
Donor anonymity is preserved. All tissue is collected under applicable regulations and guidelines regarding consent issues, protection of human subjects and donor confidentiality.

Recovering Valuable Resources
NDRI provides tissues for approved biomedical research and preclinical and clinical trials. Through NDRI, a valuable research resource is recovered for studies that can only be conducted using human models or for those that require a viable alternative to animal research.
