Why Organ Procurement Organizations Partner With NDRI

The importance of tissue and organ donation for research is well understood. Today, more organ procurement organizations (OPOs) recognize that research is an important option for families presented with the decision to donate life.

The OPO is in a unique position to further such research, which may ultimately benefit millions of people. Many organs and tissues not suitable for transplant can be donated for research, giving individuals and families the opportunity to advance medical science and contribute to the development of new treatments and cures.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) evaluates OPOs' performance in recovering organs for research. Many OPOs work exclusively with NDRI to manage their organ and tissue research programs, as we have unmatched experience in providing anatomical gifts for research and in coordinating efficient recovery and fulfillment.

Each year, NDRI and AOPO award one OPO with an Empowering Research and Discovery Award for their work with donation to research. Learn more here.

NDRI is a Not-For-Profit (501c3) Corporation.
